More information!

Here is a Request for Records form from the ACLU. You may want to use this to request records from the Board of Education.

This website has policies from a variety of TN schools. The few I have looked at seem to be the same just a different county. Some of the policies I have found interesting:
  • Nepotism
  • Duties of Board Members
  • School Board Meetings
  • Notification of Meetings
  • Appeals to and Appearances Before the Board
  • School Board Records
  • Nonrenewal
  • Complaints and Grievances
  • Evaluation of the Director of Schools
  • Director of Schools' Role in Negotiations
  • Qualifications and Duties of the Director of Schools
  • Director of Schools
  • Recruitment and Selection

On the TSBA website, follow the "Capitol Watch" link to the "Legislative Advocacy Center" to "Briefs: The Case for Appointed Director of Schools." There are organizational materials, form letters, powerpoints, and other resources that could be adapted FOR an elected director of schools. Of particular interest is the "Opposition" section in one of the powerpoint presentations, stating some of the same views voiced by members of our group. For folks that are intimidated by letter-writing, the form letters would be a great way to get the process started.
